About American Family Hearing Center

American Family Hearing has operated under the care of Dr. Jennifer Schaal-Sampson since 1995. As a long-established part of first the Allenhurst and now Oakhurst community, we are invested in doing right by our neighbors. We're here to stay, and the experience our patients have with us is important.

We greatly enjoy seeing our patients return year after year so we can help them with their hearing needs. We know we've done our job right when the same patients continue with us for decades, and we're honored to say that generations of families trust us with their hearing. If you need reliable hearing healthcare from someone who has your best interest in mind, American Family Hearing Center is here to help.

In 2015, we relocated from Allenhurst to a new, specially designed, first-floor facility in Oakhurst, where it remains today. Since 1999, American Family Hearing Center has also had a satellite office at Seabrook Village Medical, available by appointment.

Dr. Jennifer Schaal-Sampson became the owner of American Family Hearing in 1995 as a young audiologist with a vision. She took her new practice and upgraded it with advanced diagnostic and hearing aid fitting techniques, and for the past three decades (and counting), she's worked to keep it cutting-edge and on top of the latest advancements in hearing aid technology.

Dr. Schaal-Sampson was drawn to the field of audiology because it combined two of her passions: working with people and working with technology. She likes to joke that deep down she's an engineer who enjoys playing with new gadgets. And she can't imagine herself doing anything else — she feels privileged to get to help people communicate better with their families and the world around them. She loves that her job is about fixing things, whether that's fixing communication between people or fixing hearing aids.

Dr. Schaal-Sampson is a graduate of Rutgers University. She received her master's degree from George Washington University and her Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida. Dr. Schaal-Sampson was an adjunct faculty member at the College of New Jersey. She is the president of the New Jersey Hearing Aid Dispensers Examining Committee responsible for testing and licensing hearing aid dispensers in the state. She is a longtime resident of East Brunswick, where she lives with her school teacher husband, two kids, two dogs, and two cats.

Why an Audiologist?

Why an audiologist

If you've gotten hearing aids before and weren't satisfied with the result, consider where you got those hearing aids, especially if you bought them online or from a big-box store.

Hearing aids aren't one-size-fits-all. They need to be specially fit for your unique hearing loss and lifestyle. In order to get the most out of your hearing aids and truly hear the best you can, the key is visiting a trained professional. Hearing loss cannot be self-diagnosed or self-treated. A proper evaluation is critical. It's more than just measuring your hearing loss (although that is important); it's also about how you perceive the sound, and that can't be measured on a chart. It requires the help of an expert.

An audiologist will be able to help you identify and treat any hearing concerns you have. Audiologists have extensive education and training behind the services they offer. In the case of Dr. Schaal-Sampson at American Family Hearing, that advanced training is combined with two decades of experience in the field of hearing.

Your First Appointment

Our waiting room is comfortable and welcoming so you'll feel at ease as soon as you arrive. We'll give you some paperwork to fill out with your hearing history. Then our audiologist will call you back into her office, where she'll review your paperwork and start to understand what might have been the cause of your hearing problem. We'll check your ears for cerumen (earwax) just in case your hearing problem is the result of blockage in your ear. Once we've looked at your ears, we'll bring you back into the booth for a full hearing test, which is more than just a screening; it will give us a full understanding of your hearing situation.

Often insurance companies will cover the cost of a hearing test, and we can help handle that paperwork for you. After the hearing test, we'll consult with you based on your hearing loss, lifestyle, and listening needs so we know what kind of amplification will be appropriate for you. We do keep demo units in the office for you to try hearing aids for yourself before you make a decision.
