Hearing Aids at American Family Hearing Center

At American Family Hearing, our primary focus is helping you with your hearing concerns. We never pressure patients to buy hearing aids and we never push more expensive options than needed or a particular brand. What matters most is whether you are getting the best option for you.

We are a multi-brand practice, which allows us to choose whatever hearing aids manufacturer we think are the best fit for an individual patient. We are free to make decisions based on our patients' needs because we are not in partnership with any particular company. The brand we recommend depends on the patient's hearing loss, since each manufacturer has their own strengths. We like to have different options available so we can pick and choose from the best for our patients.

Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids are available in many different sizes. The size of the hearing aid you choose will not necessarily affect the price, so selecting the right hearing aids depends on your individual hearing loss, your preferences and your lifestyle. We offer invisible-in-canal (IIC), completely-in-canal (CIC), in-the-canal (ITC), in-the-ear (ITE), receiver-in-canal (RIC), and behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids.

Of these styles, we find that many of our patients prefer the receiver-in-canal (RIC) because it leaves the ear canal open, so it doesn't feel like you have something in your ear. That makes it the most comfortable option, and it's often very hard for other people to notice. However, for patients who absolutely want the smallest and most invisible options, custom-fit hearing aids that go completely in your ear are a popular choice. We always have a long discussion with every patient about what is best for them and their needs.

Hearing aids generally fall into the following categories:

Over the Ear In the Ear Semi-Implantable CROS/BiCROS

"Over the Ear"

The body of these devices sit behind the ear and contains the microphones and signal processors. Sound is transmitted into the ear either via wire with a receiver on the end, or via thin tube with amplified sound funneled directly from the body of the hearing aid. The size of the aid varies depending on battery size and how powerful the device is.

Hearing Aid Brands

American Family Hearing Center dispenses and services hearing aids and assistive listening technology from a wide variety of manufacturers.

Hearing aids Oakhurst NJ

We're one of only a few practices in the area that distributes Lyric hearing aids, which are a very popular and convenient choice for active patients or patients with dexterity issues. Lyric hearing aids are very small devices that are placed deep in your ear canal. Once the hearing aids are placed in your ears, they'll stay there for two months at a time. You can sleep while wearing them; you can shower with them in; you can just put them in and forget about them until your next appointment.

Our patients who wear Lyric hearing aids love how seamlessly the devices fit into their lives. Also, if you find it difficult to change batteries or manipulate the settings on traditional hearing aids, Lyric hearing aids can make your life that much easier. If we think you're audiologically appropriate for Lyric hearing aids, we'll let you know and talk about whether they're the right choice for you.

Powerful Hearing Aid Features

All hearing aids perform better in noisy situations than they used to, thanks to smart hearing aids that can filter out unnecessary sounds and help you focus on what you want to hear. If you've been holding off on getting hearing aids because you are concerned they won't work for you, or you know someone who's had a bad experience, we encourage you to give them a try because most concerns patients have (such as whistling/feedback) are based on old hearing aids, rather than newer technology.

Hearing aids are also a lot more affordable than you might think. They often last for anywhere between 3 and 7 years, so the up-front cost balances out over time. And there are many options to choose from, so we can almost always find hearing aids that will work for your budget. Cost is determined not by size but by the level of technology you choose. Higher-end hearing aids are especially good at filtering out noise, so they're perfect for active people who need a lot out of their hearing aids to live life to the fullest.

New Advances in Hearing Aid Technology

Over the years, we've seen two amazing technological advancements that have made a huge difference in our patients' lives. The first is rechargeability, which means patients no longer have to worry about changing batteries, something that had previously been a challenge for many patients. The other major game-changer has been bluetooth connectivity. Some modern hearing aids can connect directly with a cell phone, enabling patients to manipulate their hearing aids in real-time so that they can better hear in individual situations. We will also soon be able to offer remote hearing aid adjustments via cell phones with some hearing aid manufacturers.

Why Professional Fitting is Important

Right now it is possible to purchase hearing aids or our personal sound amplification devices over-the-counter or online. While it seems convenient and may save money, this is actually not a great solution. Without a professional, you cannot be sure that a device will address your individual needs. Hearing loss is very personal, and it requires personalized testing and programming for your hearing aids to be effective. That's why it's important to see an experienced professional, like an audiologist, to have your hearing aids selected and programmed to suit your particular hearing loss and your lifestyle.
